The Medina of Hammamet

Map of the Medina
It is difficult to escape a visit to Hammamet medina. As small as it may be, it still is a picturesque area where it feels good to wander on foot. A 15th-century kasbah with high walls surrounds the old city that can be accessed through three main gates. Walls are whitewashed with the Tunisian blue that prevails on windows. But the doors have an intricate decoration. Some of the streets are so narrow that only one person can use it at a time. It is clean and so captivating that once you are there, you want to explore each corner and discover every nook and cranny. In some places, you may go up to an open terrace either on the open sea or the roofs of the medina. It has its own definite charm although it sometimes evokes Sidi Bou Saïd. There are shops, some for tourists, but people live here. So there is always an air of authenticity that contributes to creating a feeling of exhilaration.

The Kasbah walls tower above the Gulf of Hammamet on one side and an open square on the modern city side. This is where the old mosque is located.
