It would seem totally incongruous to talk about Thailand without mentioning its food. There are for sure other Asian countries, where food plays an important role: like China or Malaysia. Yet in Thailand, it has become almost a national trend. This may well be identical to what happens in France!
Food is absolutely everywhere in Thailand: in the streets, in shopping malls, in a great many public buildings, and of course every time there is a celebration opportunity.

There is no lack of all kinds of food in local markets particularly when it comes to fruits, veggies or all kind of spices, as these are the main ingredients of the Thai cuisine.

The variety of Thai food is amazing. Its main characteristics is due to its specific taste in which herbs play a major role (basil, mint, garlic, ginger, green onion, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves) along with many spices. It is often hot (red or green chili is the most common), but these are not always mixed with the food. Often enough, they remain a side option to be added according to individual taste. Fish and seafood are particularly favored by the Thais. Cooking is fast but getting it ready can be tedious. However, this is done ahead of time, making the serving always quick.

Thai cuisine is well-known the world over because of its variety and of its taste loved internationally.
It is made of soups [tom], salads [salat], noodles [kuay tiao] or pasta, a great variety of curries as well as rice [khâo]. Pork [mu] and chicken [gai] are predominant, but shrimps or prawns [kung] are also the main ingredients like cashew-nuts and coconuts [ma phrao].

Some have become signature dishes like green papaya salad [som tam], Masaman curry, green curry, coconut chicken soup [tom ka gai], spicy fish soup [tom yam], pad thai or mango sticky rice [khâo niao mamuang] for dessert. Noodles are a Chinese heritage.
