Here the Sorgue River forms a pristine pool
|
Provence has many charming villages, particularly in the department of Vaucluse, near the medieval city of Avignon.
L’Isle-sur-la Sorgue is one of these captivating cities. Its name in French says it all: an island on the Sorgue River. The Sorgue is only a small river, but its refreshing coolness accounts for the invigorating feeling it provides. It flows in a circle around the old part of town, hence its name of being an island. The few water wheels have become a local curiosity. As far back as the Middle Ages, it was a way to provide t energy to some local clean industries like silk, and wool. or cotton weaving or dyeing as well as a bit of fishing.
Nowadays, it is a well-known place for its Sunday open-air market for its flea market, and uncountable antique shops. Many open-air cafés and restaurants have flourished along the river banks. Needless to say that it attracts words of visitors from all over the place on weekends. Therefore, finding a place to park or sit at one of the local restaurants might be hard.
