CRETE is the largest Greek island and also the southernmost part of the Greek archipelago. Distances are not big between places but it is often made slow due to rugged topography, some narrow and winding mountain roads.
Leaving from Heraklion Airport, this road trip lasted two weeks and covered a total mileage of 1,350km. It was all planned leisurely with stopovers chosen to be convenient to explore a few specific regions on the island.

2.Main stopovers of the road itinerary:
The driving around the island was planned clockwise. Here are the elected stopovers:
2.1. Agios Nikolaos (3 nights)
2.2. Sitia (2 nights)
2.3. Mirtos (1 night)
2.4. Agia Galini (1 night)
2.5. Chania (3 nights)
2.6. Rethymno (2 nights)
2.7. Heraklion (2 nights)
The first two stops at Agios Nikolaos and Sitia permitted us to explore thoroughly the eastern tip of Crete.
The next two destinations were meant to explore the southern coast of the island on the Libyan sea, as well as to visit the ruins of Phaestos.
Chania is not only a must place to see but also a good starting point to explore the western tip of the island along the Ionian sea.
Driving from Rethymno - another lovely historic town - to Heraklion enables one to discover the northern coast on a particularly scenic drive. And finally, Heraklion is a good starting point to visit the ruins of Knossos, and eventually the site of Malia, on the northeastern coast.
