Bangkok has one of the largest Chinatown in the world. It becomes a bustling & colorful place to visit whenever there is a Chinese celebration. Last time I came here was during Chinese New Year.
But today was the first day of the Vegetarian Festival and they had floats ready by 5:00PM. So I took the MRT to Hua Lamphong Station and walked from there to Yaowarat Road, the main street of Chinatown.

The Vegetarian Festival happens yearly on the 9th lunar calendar, that is at the end of September till the beginning of October. This Chinese Heritage was brought to Thailand by the former Chinese immigrants. It is a way to purify the body as well as the spirit. But this year the celebrations will be held twice longer than usual. According to the Chinese calendar, every 180 years, the 9th lunar month counts twice. So the festival will be first held from September 23 to October 3 and again from October 24 to November 1st!
The main float had a live Goddess of Mercy with her attendants. But there was also a big Chinese Dragon and a Lion Dance ceremony. Along Yaowarat Street, there were dozens of food stalls offering tons of Chinese vegetarian foods. Needless to say, I had to gibe a try!

It was a nice festive time to attend. I took many photos and went back to the side alleys to be in the mood of ancient China and feel a bit different in the streets of Bangkok.
