As opposed to Hammamet, whose medina is more residential, the old medina of Monastir is simply another section of town with its shops and public buildings. But it also shares the fact that it is enclosed within ancient defensive walls. This is because in the past the inhabitants feared the attacks coming from the sea.
So, Monastir's Medina may not have the charms of Hammamet's but it is still a great place to visit. As it is full of trades and activity, it takes you back in time and into an oriental atmosphere through both eyes and scents.
Besides the everyday trade, some of the alleys are truly picturesque. You may also come across some old buildings and a few interesting doors with specific designs so typical of Tunisia.
