Ban Krut is a small, but pleasant Thai beach resort on the Gulf of Thailand. It is about halfway between Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon on the eastern coast of the Malay Peninsula. Even during the rainy season, this is a great place to relax for a few days.
At this time of the year, particularly if you choose a week-day, there are very few people around. The beach is particularly nice, very wide here, and stretching for miles and miles with absolutely no one around! The sand is fine and the water is very clear. Some more, the beach is deprived of any form of pollution. Perhaps it is due to a lacté of visitors for many months. What is also great is that a line of trees provides shade away from the scorching sun. They are either casuarinas or coconut-trees.
It is a great time to be on the beach at sunrise. Sometimes, fishermen come back to the shore with their early morning catch. At this time of day, there are also a few joggers. This is the only time of the day - with the evening - when you can actually come across local Thai people on the beach!
I found a nice bungalow facing the beach in a resort south of the small town. There are some good restaurants in town along the seafront, where you can get all the seafood you want. I also like the nice coffee shop located in another great resort in town.
And if you like to visit something while resting in Ban Krut, there is a peninsula, on the northern side of the beach, with a giant sitting Buddha and a wonderful Thai temple called Wat Tang Sai.
Driving from Bangkok can take about 5 hours or more, depending on the traffic.
