At Dürsternbrook Farm |
Namibia seems to be a key player in preserving its natural life & environmental riches. It surely remains one of the country's main assets.
Indeed, they have been trying to protect and even repopulate endangered animals like the whales, along with the south Atlantic coast, or the fast-disappearing cheetah population inland. It seems they have already been successful.
One particular place, worth seeing near Windhoek, is a vast farmland called Dürsternbrook Farm, about 60km north of the Namibian capital. This is a part of a program where local farmers are engaged in preserving the wildlife of the country.
Dürstenbrook Farm is at the foot of a mountain range; it has a limited space to host a few visitors but mainly offers a locally organized safari to observe the wildlife on the estate and particularly a visit to a protected area dedicated to cheetahs and leopards, animals which can be hard to see otherwise.
This is a summary of a typical visit to the farm:
'Cats unlimited'
Our main wildlife attraction, the cheetah, and leopard drive takes place every afternoon, and you will have the opportunity to see, from the safety of one of our vehicles, at least one of each of our leopards and cheetahs at feeding time.
Our big cats are free roaming, within large enclosures, but not self-sustaining, as there is not natural enough game for them to survive on. Although there is a huge demand for these animals to be trained as 'pets', that is not our policy here at Düsternbrook - we believe in protecting the natural habitat of these wild animals so that they can roam and breed freely, safely, and comfortably, as they have done for thousands of years.
There is lots of space, and from the vehicle, you will have a great view for taking some amazing photographs of these beautiful animals.
In our package price, the standard tour is included. This tour is always in the afternoon at 14.00 in winter (Apr-Sep) or 15.30 in summer time (Sep-Apr).
Our guest farm is located on a mountain with a breathtaking view overlooking a dry wide riverbed. The historical old farmhouse is built out of natural stone, in colonial style.
On our safari farm, we have an abundant diversity of wildlife, such as giraffe, oryx, steenbok, cape eland, kudu, water birds, zebra, baboon, cheetah, leopard, and wildebeest. We offer special drives to see our cheetahs and leopards which live on our farm.
