Itinerary of the trip to Namibia (April-May 2018)

Flying from Thailand to Namibia

1. From Bangkok [BKK] to Doha [DOH] with QATAR AIRWAYS 

24/04- The first leg of the trip is made at night aboard the A380-800 bound for Doha, Qatar. A time to rest and get some sleep in order to ease up the whole journey. This flight will take 7h.

--> Transit at Hamad International Airport.

A short time to relax and refresh before continuing the journey southwards this time.

2. From Doha [DOH] to Windhoek [WDH] with QATAR AIRWAYS

25/04- The second leg of the trip is done aboard another great aircraft the B787-8 Dreamliner. This is

a direct flight mostly done along the eastern coast of Africa until Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania. Then the aircraft swerved westwards above Zambia and Botswana before landing at Windhoek. This flight has a duration of 8h50.

--> Arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport.

The taxi picked up to town has been arranged. Windhoek is at about 35km away from the airport. First impression of coolness, deep colors and brightness.

In Windhoek for the next three days (from 25 to 28/04).

-Had a great downtown Pension with a lovely tropical garden: Hotel Pension Steiner, Windhoek

-A memorable evening drink at the rooftop bar of the Hilton to watch the sunset: Hilton Windhoek
-A self-guided hiking tour of the Botanic GardenNational Botanic Garden of Namibia
-Besides seeing all the main city landmarks, I arranged a few interesting tours outside the capital.
-A 6km-hike with a guide at Daan Viljoen Game Park, west of Windhoek (3h-walk)
-A morning guided tour of Katutura Township including the reservoir lake in the city outskirts.
-An afternoon drive with a farm safari at Düsternbrook Farm, north of Windhoek, to observe in particular live cheetahs & leopards.

7 Days Prearranged tour of Namibia's Top 3 Attractions


Day 1- 29/04- From Windhoek to the Namib Desert [350 km /5h]: scenic Spreetshoogte Pass & the oasis of Solitaire.
- 2 nights at Moon Mountain Lodge

Day 2- 30/04- Full day in the Sossusvlei area [around 200 km]: Sesriem Gate to Sossusvlei at sunrise, Dune nº1 for a practical explanation of the environment. A hard climb of Dune 45 [170m], a 4x4 drive across a sandy trail + a 30mn-walk to Dead Vlei.

Lunch at the Sesriem oasis & walk through the Sesriem Canyon. Star-gazing evening at the lodge.

Day 3- 01/05- Trail drive across the Namib-Naukluft Park to Swakopmund on the Atlantic coast the Tropic of Capricorn, passing of canyons & fascinating rock formations at the Gaub Pass, scenic stop at the Kuiser River Pass. A desert trail of 240km before Walvis Bay on the South Atlantic. Continuation along the ocean and high sand dunes to Swakopmund.

Day 4- 02/05- Swakopmund and its desert area. Leisure morning in the German town of Swakopmund Kristall Galerie to have a complete overview of the Namibian minerals & a memorable visit to the gemstones exhibition. Afternoon drive to the lunar landscape of the  Moonscape carved by the Swakop River & discovery of the botanic attraction of the 'Welwitschia mirabilis', a 'living fossil' wonder, one of the oldest and most original living plants on the Earth [150 km].

Day 5- 03/05- Full day drive across the Namib Desert to Etosha National Park [550km]. Long straight tar road across, the Namib desert to the first town of Usako, passing by the uranium mine of Arandi and a far-away view of the granitic formation of the Spitzkoppe (1,728m). Continuation to Karibib, Omaruru, an 80km trail shortcut to Outjo (late lunch) before reaching the Etosha National Park main entrance.

-Night at the Halali Camp in the park.
Day 6- 04/05- A full day of animal watching in the Etosha National Park on the southern rim of the Etosha Pan. Highlights include jackal, rhino, leopard, elephant, lion, ostrich, springbok, oryx, zebra, guinea fowl, and many other birds or animals.
-Night at the Okaukuejo Camp on another side of the park.

Day 7- 06/05- Another full day drive from Etosha back to Windhoek [450km/ 6h] starting at sunrise. The road passes Outjo, Otjiwarongo, Okahandja, where there is a stop at the tribal Art Market. Continuation to Windhoek and the International Airport for my return flights to Bangkok.

--> Departure from Hosea Kutako International Airport, Windhoek.

3. Flight from Windhoek [WDH] to Johannesburg [JNB] with South African Airways.

The first flight back is done aboard an A319 bound for Johannesburg, South Africa. Excellent service for this 1h40 flight.

-Brief rest at the Bidvest Sky Lounge. Great shopping mall across Terminal A before boarding the next flight.

4. From Johannesburg [JNB] to Doha [DOH] with QATAR AIRWAYS.

Another long trip aboard a crowded B777-300ER along the coast of East Africa. This flight will last 8h25 landing in Doha at sunrise.

--> Transit at Hamad International Airport, Doha.

07/05 - Enough time to stretch & refresh after an all-night's sleep aboard the airplane. Ready to continue the journey back home.

5. From Doha [DOH] to Bangkok [BKK] with QATAR AIRWAYS.

Now aboard a half-empty A380-800 on the upper deck. This will be an enjoyable flight, much shorter than usual: 6h only!
The 7th May will almost be an unexisting day as the aircraft lands at Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Bangkok at sunset!
