Cascais, Portugal

View on the Atlantic from a coastal resort

Cascais is a lovely resort town west of Lisbon, on the northern side of the coast of the Tagus estuary. It offers two sides: a modern section touristically orientated and a charming old fishing village, which has undergone a major facelift. The resort offers many sandy beaches. But the residential area lies on the top of cliffs. On this side of town, hiking and cycling trails have been added along the coast, offering outstanding views of the ocean.

Although the old section has been modernized and adapted to European standards, It retains an irresistible charm, with a specific Portuguese touch.

Unsurprisingly, Cascais attracts a lot of celebrities as well as royalties in addition to Lisboners on weekends and foreign tourists in season. This side of the coast is known as the Portuguese Riviera.

Cascais’ immediate neighbor is the resort of Estoril, whose Casino has inspired Ian Fleming’s ‘Casino Royale’ in his famous James Bond 007 series.
