MARTIGUES – The Venice of Provence

The Island in between two canals
On the northern side of Marseilles, just past the coastal range [La Côte Bleue], there is a vast salty lake called Étang de Berre. On the eastern side of this shallow lake, there is Marseille-Provence

Airport and on the western side, a picturesque fishermen's town called Martigues.
A canal links the lake to the Mediterranean Sea at the major port facilities of Fos-sur-Mer. The old fisherman community is lying on the shores of the lake and is spread out on a few canals giving the impression it has been built on water. This accounts why it is is nicknamed 'The Venice of Provence'.
Recently, the city held an Italian Festival for a few days. They opened an Italian village in a park by the lake. There, a group of Italians sold gourmet foods, ice-creams, wines, limoncello, and even truffles. But most interestingly, they also were having a silent procession of masked-clad costumes that looked like a copycat of the Venice Carnival.
